The Town of Port Hedland was once recognised as a transient town with the sole purpose of servicing the local industries but in recent years the unique beauty of the area, the lifestyle opportunities on offer and the remarkable community spirit have encouraged many people to make this Town their permanent home. South Hedland is a dynamic town with a relaxed and open lifestyle. Easy access to the ocean provides for a variety of aquatic leisure activities including superb fishing, and whales and nesting flatback turtles can also be seen in season. Millstream and Karijini National Parks are within easy driving distance while Broome and the Kimberley are also with reach. Parklands and public open spaces are an important focus for South Hedland New Living and Shay Gap Park received a $500,000 makeover comprising new play equipment, additional seating, shade, water fountains, paths and lighting. Works have also set to commence on the $13.5m Marquee Park which has been funded by South Hedland New Living, BHP Billiton and the Town of Port Hedland. In addition to picnic and barbecue areas, playground equipment, kick about areas and landscaped areas the park will include two water play areas with interactive water features. Everything you need in South Hedland is easily accessible including parks, shops, libraries, recreation centres, local business and more. Most importantly, the community spirit and the people are what make South Hedland so special. Every weekend there is something to do and people to meet.
