South hedland Background

South Hedland was originally designed as a satellite city to Port Hedland in the 1960’s with the capacity to become home to 40,000 residents. In 2006, the Department of Housing (DOH) introduced the South Hedland New Living initiative and appointed JAXON to project manage the seven year improvement program.

The objectives of the South Hedland New Living program are to:

  • More evenly distributed public housing;
  • Refurbish housing for retention by DOH, to sell to existing tenants, and to sell to the general public;
  • Beautify streets , parks and other public areas within South Hedland;
  • Increase opportunities for home ownership;
  • Develop land for new residential housing;
  • Create a vibrant and integrated community.
