Urban Renewal & Sustainability

South Hedland New Living is one of the largest urban renewal projects ever undertaken in Western Australian and is being carried out by the Department of Housing, in partnership with the Town of Port Hedland and JAXON. The entire project has been designed with sustainability as a primary focus to manage community needs both now and in the future to ensure the community continues to thrive and prosper. South Hedland New Living is focusing on the three key areas of sustainability:

Social

  • Increase community pride;
  • Promote community diversity;
  • Increase community involvement in groups and programs;
  • Improve community safety and sense of security.

Economic

  • Provide financial resources to ensure project viability;
  • Create and implement traineeships, apprenticeships and employment opportunities;
  • Support local business;
  • Promote private sector investment in the South Hedland community.

Environmental

  • Environmental design to maximise solar efficiency;
  • Water sensitive landscape design and use of local species;
  • Work with schools and community groups to create and enhance public open spaces and generate environmental projects;
  • Improve pedestrian and transport opportunities.

South Hedland New Living is already delivering positive results across all three areas. The refurbished homes and lots are improving the quality and helping address the high demand for housing in South Hedland. The project is also delivering improved access and connectivity within South Hedland, impressive parklands and streetscapes, main entry statements, and support for a wide range of community initiatives encompassing youth, sport, health, the environment and more.

Together the Department of Housing, the Town of Port Hedland, JAXON, key stakeholders and local businesses are injecting millions of dollars into the urban renewal of South Hedland and the results are speaking for themselves. South Hedland is rapidly becoming WA’s biggest urban renewal success story.
